HCA: Maternal Navigation App
Overview.
We partnered with HCA Healthcare to reimagine maternal care navigation using Pegasystems software. The initiative focused on designing a patient-centered application for maternal navigators, modernizing workflows across multiple hospitals and aligning with HCA’s branding standards.
Challenge & context.
Maternal navigators relied on outdated, task-centric dashboards that buried key patient information. This led to inefficiencies in managing cases, limited visibility into patient progress, and missed opportunities to improve care quality. The challenge was to create a modern, patient-centric experience while staying within Pegasystems’ model driven development platform and adhering to strict brand guidelines.
Discovery & research.
Our team conducted on-site visits to HCA headquarters in Nashville and The Women’s Hospital of Texas in Houston. We interviewed doctors, nurses, and administrative staff to capture workflows, daily goals, and real-world challenges. These insights informed journey mapping and service blueprinting, which highlighted breakdowns in communication, duplicative data entry, and time wasted searching for case details.
Design philosophy & approach.
The design was grounded in human-centered design principles and the belief that maternal navigation should revolve around patients rather than tasks. Using Pegasystems’ case structure, we reorganized workflows into intuitive “microjourneys” that mirrored how navigators think about and track patients. This approach emphasized clarity, empathy, and actionable data, while ensuring all designs could be implemented within HCA’s enterprise standards.
Solution & key deliverables.
We delivered a series of dashboard mockups that evolved the experience from a cluttered, outdated view into modern, patient-first concepts. Key improvements included:
Patient-centered organization with quick access to goals, history, and active cases
Simplified data visualization to highlight what matters most
Integrated search functionality for faster case retrieval
A branded, clean look aligned with HCA’s system guidelines
Results & business outcomes.
The redesigned dashboard allowed maternal navigators to focus on patients rather than navigating system complexity. The solution reduced administrative burden, improved data visibility, and enabled more proactive care. ROI was realized through faster workflows, improved nurse satisfaction, and stronger patient engagement across HCA’s maternal care programs.
